One of the more relevant topics that we have been discussing in class, would be the concept of “technological literacy”. For just about this entire semester so far, we have been learning and expanding upon the idea of literacy, and what it means to be “literate”. After finally coming to terms with my own perceptions it became clear to me that literacy is a word that can be used very loosely, to describe wether or not a person has the ability to interact and socialize with those around them through commonly understood means of exchanging information. Now that the world around us is revolutionizing and industrializing to the fullest extent, its no wonder that technology has also managed to creep into our world of literacy! To my understanding so far, technological literacy is term coined in order to describe how we use tech. related objects in life in order to communicate and socialize with others. Most of you reading this I'm sure, were born in the 21st century, how important of a role did technology play in your experiences while growing up? How often did you use a computer, if you even had one? How did you get ahold of your friends? Compare your own childhood, to that of a child growing up now in 2013. Making plans with friends no longer require face to face encounters, since most kids are given cell phones at such a young age its now far more common to just dial a number, or send a text out. Free time is no longer going out with friends and kicking the soccer ball around or playing a game of tag, now most kids opt to stay inside and glue themselves to t.v screens while playing video games, or surf the web for hours on end. Do you believe technology is having a greater positive or negative effect on literacy? Technology has created a middle man in the process of literacy. Instead of just strait forward communicating, we now must know how to operate the mechanics of the technology we are using, before the interaction aspect of it can even begin. We must comprehend how to pic up a pencil, or turn on a lap top, how to copy a file and make posts on media pages, before the socialization part of literacy can even come into play. There are countless pros and cons to technology and its role in literacy, how do you feel about it? Should technology stop while its ahead, or is it in our best interest to keep pushing ahead and revolutionizing? A video I was watching gave me the realization as to how integrated technology has really gotten within our everyday lives, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OINa46HeWg8. Does this clip make you feel any differently? If so, how?
